Concepts and Skills Review Curriculum Support

SUPPLEMENTAL SUPPORT

We encourage families to use quality, state adopted curriculum along with the CA State Common Core Standards to ensure content mastery.

The following tools may be beneficial supplements for your families:

On Core Mathematics (Publisher: Houghton Mifflin; Ordering Vendor: Rainbow Resource) is a complete program for aligning to State Standards with interactive, real-world applications that help students deepen their understanding of crucial math concepts, while addressing the content standards and the Standards for Mathematical Practice. This program allows students to not just “do the math” but also to “understand and explain” their math.

Each bundle order comes complete with a Student Edition and a Teacher Edition (TE). See below if TE is not needed.

Use the below order information to order Student Edition consumable workbooks if TE is not needed.  Order from Rainbow Resources. Teacher Editions can be checked out from the CW Learning Center.  Contact the CWLC to confirm availability.

Common Core “Flipbooks” (Vendor: McGraw Hill): These are reference books for the parent-teachers that will help them understand the expectation of the CA standards. The guides are affordable, and purchased by grade level. They include grade level specific standards, "ensuring understanding", essential questions, learning targets, and academic vocabulary.  This is a parent-teacher resource (it is not a workbook for the student).

Common Core Coach (Vendor: Triumph Learning): These are grade level supplemental workbooks by subject that embody the philosophy of the state standards, and do a pretty good job aligning to the new CAASPP assessment format, including the new Performance Tasks.  The teacher guide offers extensions that could be used with their primary curriculum. This would be a good “skeleton” guide for parents to use with their current curriculum.

Mind Tools Website that showcases strategies and tools for a variety of skill areas which include problem-solving, reading, learning skills, etc.

Questioning Toolkit This webpage from The Educational Technology Journal focuses on questioning tools and techniques.

What are the biggest changes in Common Core? The biggest changes in Common Core come in these “big shifts” in instruction.  We encourage all Parent-Teachers to begin incorporating these shifts into their instructional methodology now:

  • Increased and Integrated Technology (starting with computer navigation and typing in Kindergarten; reminder: 3rd graders will be expected to type a full page essay in a single sitting);
  • Rigor and Relevance (the new standards are more focused to allow time to go deeper in understanding);
  • Text Complexity & Expository Text  (quantitative, qualitative and student task);
  • Increased Writing (Consider My Access online writing program)

The Digital Library is a critical component of the Smarter Balanced system of assessments and will include a variety of resources to improve teaching and learning. The Digital Library, set to launch in 2014, will provide teachers with an online clearinghouse of classroom-based, formative assessment strategies and practices that enhance day-to-day instruction, including resources to interpret data and reports from the Smarter Balanced summative and interim assessments.

Practice Assessments:

The Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (Smarter Balanced) has placed online for public access a set of practice tests for grades three through eight and grade eleven. Practice tests are available in both English-language arts and mathematics for each grade. The practice tests are available on the California Department of Education (CDE) Smarter Balanced Practice Tests Web page and include test questions with the same features that students will experience in 2014–15. Online access to the practice tests will not require a unique username and password, so we can use them for teacher training as well as discussions with parents. There will be no immediate scoring of the tests, but scoring keys will be made available later in the year. We encourage ESs, parents and students to view the practice tests.
